Would you agree that characters in any story don’t need to be likeable, they just have to be interesting?I would. And they do not actually have to be interesting: they have to keep the author and the reader interested, which is slightly different.
Mr Pooter, in George and Weedon Grossmith’s Diary of a Nobody is neither particularly likable nor in any way interesting, except to himself. But reading his diary is a delight.
